San Angelo is a city in central Texas. It has several nicknames including "The River City," "The Concho City," "The Pearl of the Conchos," and "The Oasis of West Texas," however many residents plainly call it "Angelo." The city was originally called Santa Angela, after the wife of Bartholomew J. DeWitt, the town's founder. It was later shortened to San Angela, but was again changed to San Angelo due to Spanish grammar that mandates that feminine words end in "a."
